Sightseeing in Nanjing
Discover some of China’s astonishing ancient history when you pay a visit to the Confucius Temple, constructed in 1034 during the Song dynasty. The nearby Dacheng Hall is also worth a visit. Bordered by a 36-metre-long screen wall, the Hall is home to China’s largest figure of Confucius together with a collection of 38 stunning panels made of gold, silver and jade, detailing his life. In keeping with Nanjing’s interesting history and only a short walk away is the carefully preserved complex of the 2,500-year-old Chaotian Palace.
Nanjing is popular for its plethora of colourful festivals, including the Qinhuai Lantern Fair (Jinling Lantern Fair). The festival dates as far back as the Ming dynasty when the then Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang requested a spring lantern fair in celebration of the New Year. The tradition was passed down through the years to this day. The celebration takes place at night by the Fuzimiao riverside, sometime between the 1st and the 15th January of the lunar calendar. Another breathtakingly pretty festival is the International Plum Blossom Festival, when the luscious plum blossoms come to life in early spring. Included in the spectacular sights and sounds are cultural shows and stalls displaying locally made goods.
